For the follow equation, state the value of the discriminant and the describe the nature if the solution. 18x^2-3x+8=0 I need to know if there is one real solution , two imaginary solution or two real solution. I got the answer 1+3i√7 1-3i√7 ------- , ------ 12 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Have you tried using wolfram alpha to check your answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is basically what i have

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, your answer is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or do i need it just like they show

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one real, two imaginary or two real is the question now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, what do you think it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the only thing that is different is that 12 is in a fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think two imaginary solution is what I think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's irrelevant, your answer and wolfram's answer is exactly the same thing. And you're right, two imaginary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You don't really need wolfram. If the equation has the form a*x^2 + b*x + c = 0 then the discriminant is d = b^2 - 4*a*c. Now you have 3 cases: 1) if d>0, then you have 2 real distinct solutions 2) if d=0, then you have 2 real identical solutions 3) if d<0, then you have 2 imaginary solutions (which is your case) Good luck!

It was a two part question...I was suggesting wolfram alpha for verifying the numerical value of the x-intercepts college girl found using her own math, not necessarily for determining how many solutions

Good input though
