calculate the discriminant D = b² - 4ac
D = (-7)² - 4(3)(-5) = 49 + 60 = 109

         - b  +/- root(b² - 4ac)        -(-7)  +/- root(109)

              7 + root(109)                 7 - root(109)
so x = --------------    or    --------------

@Harkirat:  The problem is he/she is most likely going to only see the part where you wrote x = blah blah and put that into the online homework and be content.  It's more important that we verify that they actually understand it.
