Explain why down syndrome people have speech impediments. please ^.^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are multiple physical features that are prominent with down syndrome. One of which is an protruding or oversized tongue. There is also a high probability of ear infections or hearing loss. Put these two factors together and you are very likely to have a speech impediment. The child cannot hear the words as clearly when first being taught and then the tongue makes it harder to pronounce. This is one reason many support groups promote the use of sign language at an early age.
