which of the following are functions and why? A) x^2/81- y^2/16=3 B) x^2+ | √y^2/3 | =3y C) y= √3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a function must contain a domain and co-domain. To you and me that means an x and a y. but it requires one other thing. in mathematical language, it is called a one-to-one correspondence, to you and mean it means for every x you enter, you can only get one y. under these conditions a) is a function. not sure about B, would need to test it, it includes a modulus, which means only a positive result can be produced. and C) is not as square root results in + and - answer.

Oh alright ty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|sqrt(y^2/3|-3y =-x^-2 is not a function because certain values of x will not result in a negative answer for y, because y includes a modulus function which will only give positive results.
