Is it illegal to SSH into someone else's computer on your network?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you don't have permission, then generally yes. Depends on the law in your country.

If you are the owner of the private network then it should be legal. I mean... they are on your network, and you establish the rules for your property.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True but their information still belongs to them. You may posses the means by which to access that information, but does that make it legal to access their personal property?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is logical to me that by being on the network that is your property, they must abide by your terms and rules for that network. Perhaps write up a lengthy terms & conditions that users of your network must agree to in order to use it, in which you specify that you maintain the right to SSH into their computer. That would then make it legal.

I think you're right. As long as you had them agree to the terms of conditions or somehow had that information available within your network, then It would be legal.

It would be worth checking the actual legality of this with a professional if you really plan to do it, as not all legal rights can be waived even in the event of terms & conditions. If your terms & conditions stated that you were allowed to stab me if I entered your premises and by entering I agreed to those terms, I doubt you'd actually legally be allowed to stab me ;)

I could if you were on my property :) But that's a law of Florida, if not the United States. You bring up a good point.
