put x = number of tickets ron sells. then kathy must sell 24 - x 
total cost of rons is 
$$3x$$ and of kathy's is 
$$5.5(24-x)$$ and this must equal 87 so put 
$$3x+5.5(24-x)=87$$ solve for x
