abs(-3)=3 but they say we use absolute value for distance etc as they don't have sign.So in this example what is the sign for 3

Well, they do have a sign, it is a possitive one +, the only thing is that on general convention you don't put the plus sign

so when we use abs(-3) ,here we are converting the -ve number to a +ve number

that is it... There are certain times in which velocity can be negative. Such as deacceleration.
