(Twenty kilograms of nuts consisting of cashews worth $6.00 per KG pecans worth $2.50 per KG, and peanuts worth $1.50 per kg are mixed. There are twice as many pecans as cashews, and there are as many kilograms of peanuts as pecans. The total value of the nuts is $56. How many of each is there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oooh I love these. Ready to work on them together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome. Pick a letter for each nut and tell me what you used.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or do you want me to choose variable letters?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a,b,c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. So to be safe, we always write down what each one means. I'm assuming you went in order, so: a = cashews b = pecans c = peanuts Good so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the twice as many pecans as cashews what do we do with that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, for now we're just saying what each letter refers to, so you're ok with these choices, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my teacher likes to use a t chart

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome. So, I'm hoping you've guessed by now that we'll have two equations. Do you know what each one will solve for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Unfortunately, we can't use a T-Chart for this one. :( Since there are two equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not a problem. I'll let you figure it on your own with hints: They give us two types of information about each nut. What information do they give us? For example, do they tell us about the color of each nut?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And if not, what DO they tell us about each nut?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

talking about per kg and what are mixed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, they tell you about the weight, yes, but not really anything about mixed. What other numbers relating to the nuts are given?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this like a function problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup. But what other numbers are given to us related to the nuts? We have weight, and what else?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the total value or how much of each is there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, that one is actually the weight. They don't ever tell us exactly how many nuts there are, only how many kilos of each nut. So besides that, what other kind of numerical info do we have? Reread the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do need to leave in a few minutes, so please reply as soon as possible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i figured it out got help from a friend thanks for the help though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok cool.
