92-5*7/2^3-7^2-(-6)^2
Awesome. Let's do this. Tell me what you'd do first.
i do the parenthesis?
Well, there technically aren't any parentheses. I mean there IS a (-6), but the parentheses are just there to let us know it's a negative. So we'd just fall to exponents.
would it be best to do it like this 2*2*2-7*7- (-6)(-6)
Well, that's risky, because we might end up doing something out of order.
You're better off just putting down what they equal.
ok
92-5*7/8-49-36 or+36
Awesome. It would be -36 because (-6) squared is positive 36, but then we're doing 49 MINUS 36.
now i do the multiplication on the top
and would it be -5*7
Sorry for taking so long. I was on another site helping someone else. Let's see... that's right!
So so far we have 92-35/8-49-36
Normally we'd want to do the 35/8 next, but it's as simple as it's going to get, so what do we do now?
subtract the 92-35
I know this sounds weird, but because the 35/8 is still division, we can't touch it for now. Just ignore that part (make believe it's a fraction) and go to the 49-36.
Basically, here's how you should envision the problem as for now:
lol thank you because now i am confused
\[92 - \frac{35}{8} - (49 -36)\]
I feel your pain. I hated algebra so much until I finally got used to it.
why like that though is whats confusing me
Well, normally we'd do the 35/8 first. Like... if it was 35/7, it'd turn into a nice number (5).
However, 35/8 will lead to an ugly number. Specifically,
4.375
So... for now, we decide to keep the slightly prettier 35/8
Does that part make sense so far?
yes now i have 92-35/8-13
Excellent. Were the parentheses bothering you at all? Or do you see why I snuck them in there?
do i fine the common denominator
i see why you put them there
Awesome. Lemme just write out our current equation in fraction form.
92/1-38/8-13/1
\[\frac{92}{1} - \frac{35}{8} - \frac{13}{1}\]
There's a lil typo on yours. Should say 35/8. But regardless, what is the common denominator we want?
8
beautiful.
736/8-35/8-104/8
597/8
Darn... I hate to say this, but when I double checked on my calculator, I got 21/8. Lemme redo this on a piece of paper, and I'll be right back.
thats what i got on my calculator too
Oh wow... I messed up when I put those parentheses in.
So we were good up until 92-35/8-49-36
Ok, I'm an idiot. I'm really sorry for messing up earlier.
ok
youj are oka we all make mistakes
What we should have done is 92-35/8+(-49-36)
This is letting us group the -49 and -36 together safely. I double checked this time.
35 is still over 8
correct.
ok give me a second
Earlier, I messed up and had you do positive 49 minus 36. This time, we're going to do negative 49 minus 36.
Sure thing.
-85
92-35/8+(-85)
excellent. After doing the common divisors and whatnot, you get 21/8. Great work!
i must have done my math again wrong
Really? If you multiply the 92/1 by 8/8 and the -85/1 by 8/8, you should have gotten 21/8
Go ahead and show me what you did, then. I'll see if I can catch any errors.
ok i did 92*8/1*8-35*1/8/1+(-85)*8/1*8
i got it lol
So you got (736/8)-35/8+(-680/8) I trust?
yes
what i did was left the zero of -680
Ah ok. And it did end up being 21/8 in the end? ^_^
yes
Saweet! Glad you got it. And thank God for calculators. Otherwise I'd have totally fed you an incorrect method of solving which would have probably haunted you for the rest of your algebraic life. lol Did you wanna do one more question before I go to bed? I promise to double check my steps in between this time.
yes
do i need to post it like the last
Sure, go ahead and make a new question so that others can follow along if they need to.
