Historically, the first element to fit this definition is technetium (element 43). It was the first artificially produced element that was (at the time) not found in nature, being produced in a lab in 1937 (though there is debate over whether it had been produced in 1925 in a different experiment). The name Technetium comes from the Greek "Technetos" meaning artificial. However in 1952, the element was observed in the atmospheres of certain types of stars. In the 1962, it was isolated from rocks on earth, but it is very very rare, (less than 0.2 ng/kg), and so is known as a trace element. So while it was subsequently found naturally in the universe, and ultimately on earth, it is considered to be the first artificial element made by man.
