\[slope = \frac{rise}{run}\] is what most people think of, but the rise is the side opposite the angle, and the run is adjacent to the angle. so really we have: \[slope= \frac{opp}{adj} = \tan(\theta)\] so: \[\tan(\theta) = slope\]
