I need help with a couple of square root problems..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How does \[\sqrt{(t + 5)_{}^{2}} equals t + 5\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use = for equals :)

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

t = -5

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

i guess.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but \[\sqrt{(t + 12)_{?}^{2}} equals t + 12?\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

eh..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\sqrt{a^2} = |a|\] For any a you want.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the difference between..\[\sqrt{(t + 5)_{}^{2}} = t + 5\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and \[\sqrt{(t + 12)_{}^{2}} = |t + 12|\]?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The difference is that one has a 12 and one has a 5. Otherwise there's no difference. The one with a 5 should have absolute values though.

I guess what I meant, is why is the answer to one without absolute symbols, and the other with them?
