Note sure on general chemistry books, but on a related theme, you may want to check out "What Einstein Told His Cook" and the sequel "What Einstein Told His Cook 2", which deals with the science and chemistry of food and the kitchen at a popular level. It gives a nice application to many principles in chemistry.
