Can somebody explain why my solutions manual says 1 squared = 1, instead of |1|?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because \[1^2=1\times 1=1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But -1 times -1 also equals 1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-.-=+ +.+=+ either way you get a +

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do you mean x^2 = 1 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, 1 squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, wait, I just got it, thanks. :P

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1^2 can only produce a single value; and that value is 1
