k^2+4k=96

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think of two numbers which are factors of -96 and when added give +4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(k+12)(k-8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how about -12 and 8 ot 12 and -8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nerd has it 12 and -8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-12 and 8 because k+12 = 0 k=-12 and k-8=0 k=8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no -12 and 8 give -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k^2+4k=96 k^2+4k-96=0 (k+12)(k-8)=0 -------- k+12=0 k=-12 --------- k-8=0 k=8 --------- possible answers are: -12 and 8 discard negatives and answer is: "8"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fill it in k^2+4k=96 8^2+4(8) = 96 yes!?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes - i see now - we are at cross purposes - the roots are -12 and 8 - when i referred to 12 and -8 I was talking about the numbers which go into the brackets - the numbers which give -96 and +4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. so we agree on the answer, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep
