Linux is an open source operating that is released under the GNU General Public License. Compared to windows which is sold, Linux is absolutely free. The great thing about open source software is anyone can modify and improve the products. There's multiple operating systems that utilize the Linux kernel including Ubuntu, Red Hat, Debain, etc; each of these have their own distinct advantages. Linux also is a Unix-based operating system. Compared to DOS, I find Unix to be a much easier environment to work in. In addition, Linux has tools such as Aptitude that provide a repository for free programs to download at will. For the most part, every program that exists in Windows has a Linux counterpart, or Linux version. On my school laptop, I run Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I find myself using Ubuntu 95% of the time, which is a pretty good indicator as to which I prefer. There is much much more I could go into but those are some reasons. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

There are some other things concerning linux also such it provides more control over the operating system i.e. in linux a root user has almost the complete control over the OS while in windows even the admin user does not have the complete control because most of the things in windows are hidden in a section named registry editor. So in a way linux is better than windows..

Linux gives you more control and is more customizable. However there are many different distributions of it. If you are planning on using it for home use then go with Ubuntu. Personally I prefer it over Windows because first of all it's free, and it also gives you a lot of freedom with your computer. Windows is more restricted because of the business aspect of the OS (copyrights, etc.) Linux is also one of the best softwares for servers, and older computers as it is very light on your system. Once again if you wanted to use it for a server though you would need a different distro (distribution). One downside though is that it's not too great for gaming. (It works fine but it's not the best.) Also one thing with linux is that you have to know what you're doing. So I would recommend taking tutorials if you are new to it. But in general I would recommend it over windows and if you get to know linux you will probably use it much more than windows.
