I find that choosing a "word of the day" each day and learning it helps a lot. You can either do this with a dictionary, or sign up for a service online that will send you them.

visit freerice.com. Its a site that quizzes you on your understanding of words, and for each correct answer they donate a set amount of rice to a third world country..I find that the best way to learn is often to get words wrong, so it's really helped me in the past. Just a thought. :D

Look through magazines and papers.  Cut out words that you like or appeal to you.  Keep them in an envelope and on a slow day try to make sentences or stories out of them.

Don't be afraid of what seems like posh language ie what is found in Oxford English Dictionary and formal English. Use Literary Culture. Don't be afraid to add to Vocab.

read a thesaurus. or books with wack vocab and refer to a thesaurus. it can be a fun time.
