1] The lateral area of a cube is 256 square kilometers. What is its side length? a] 4 km b] 8km c] 24 km d] 32 km

OpenStudy (anonymous):

side length = sqrt 256 = 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats a large cube!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how could it be 16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That sure is a big cube....:-) "Lateral" usually means excluding the "base", did u mean surface area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if area = 256 and its a square then the side = sqrt 256 = 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 sides (5 excluding the "base")

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh - i assumed lateral meant one of the faces of the cube

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Normally, if u say "lateral" area, it means excluding the base, like in a pyramid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a bit strange with a cube, though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyway, we can do it with 5 or 6 sides...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so area of 5 sides = 256 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yahoo answers says lateral area of a cube is 4(!) sides. who knew?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I have never heard this expression used for a cube before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well that would fit with 8 then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am not in any way endorsing this answer. caveat emptor http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110410212206AAMFx9g

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's do it with 4, 5 and 6, op can choose one...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 is sqrt 44

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kilometres!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i suppose it is 4 - the top side isn't lateral i guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But which is the "top"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes - kilometres lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or the bottom for that matter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well - the horizontal one - the others are vertical - i dont know really - just looking for possibilities

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It seems to me u cannot arbitrarily exclude 1 or 2 sides or even assume a position/orientation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Assume it is balanced on a corner...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes - i agree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Floating in free space. I have convinced myself that op really meant surface area since lateral area has no meaning.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i cant get over its size - must be an alien artifact!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually I have convinced myself that whoever posed this question has assumed that lateral means something else.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

According to the choices, it must be 8 although I don't agree and think it is a crap question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is surface area then one face = 32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

side = x, 6 sides of x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or 4 possibly:-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh aye !! - sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 doesn't work either, will have to 4 giving 8 kilometers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't allow cameras and mikes...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no need just help mr.luna
