There are two consecutive even numbers such that four times the smaller number minus one is three times the greater number. What is the smaller number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

four times an even number - 1 = an odd number, and 3 * any even number = an even number... the only numbers that meet the requirement (four times the smaller number minus 1 = 3 times the greater number) are 7 and 9, but theyre not even. these criteria are impossible for even numbers to match.
