think and explain 1. if actions equals reaction, why isnt the earth pulled into orbit around a communication satellite?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My supposition is that there isn't enough of an effect on the space-time continuum from a communication satellite. It doesn't disrupt that "fabric" of space and thus, has no gravitation effect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Simply, not enough mass. Don't ask about mass, though. That is where the God particle comes in...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the mass of the earth is much greater than that of the satellite........ if mass did not matter then earth would be going around the moon and not moon around the earth!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is the earth orbits the barycenter as does the satellite - but the radius of teh earth's orbit around it would be immeasurable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Earth does in fact 'orbit' around a communication satellite, sort of. The important thing to remember about action - reaction pairs, is that that they are always acting on two different objects. No matter how hard the Earth pulls on the satellite, the satellite pulls back on the Earth, two different objects. When the Earth gets pulled, it's larger mass keeps it from being pulled as noticeably as the satellite. The same is true with the Earth and moon, or Earth and sun, or really, any two objects. Big thing though, Newton's 3rd law action reaction pairs are always on two different objects.

Earth (and satellite) orbits the barycenter, not the satellite
