There is a formula but most likely it is done by drawing a line through all points

you should count the number of points on both sides of the line, and make sure they are either equal or nearly the same. E.g. - 5 points on one side and 6 on the other. Don't worry if your line is going over some points as well, just think about counting those on either side.
