what is alliteration?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alliteration are most repeating letters for the same consonant in one sentence...opposite the asonantion...such as---> i want to wear white clothes when ......so here the alliteration is w=4..

the well known one is 'around the rugged rock the ragged rascal ran'. DYlan Thomas was found of alliteration one of his poems ends with 'the daughters of darkness flame like fork fires still'.

Alliteration is where the first letter of the word is the consistently the same through out the phrase or sentence. Sometimes it adds a quality to writing, and sometimes it is over-the-top and meant as a tongue twister. The reason the above is an example of alliteration is due to the letter "r" in "rugged rock" "ragged rascal ran" from Lifesaver.
