a main sequence star is one that is "burning" hydrogen and turning it into helium (nuclear reaction). That's what the sun is doing now... When the sun creates enough helium in its center, the hydrogen burning will only exist in a shell around the helium. The helium in the center will get hotter and the sun will expand to a red giant...
