Find the zeros of y=x^2-2x-8 and the equation of axis of symmetry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whoops

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets try that again. axis of symmetry is \[x=-\frac{b}{2a}\] in this case you get \[x=-\frac{-2}{2\times 1}=1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to get zeros factor as \[(x-4)(x+2)=0\] \[x=4\] or \[x=-2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can see that the zeros are equidistant from the axis of symmetry. that is \[|4-1|=3\] and \[|-2-1|=3\]

But would it be x or y that equals to 1 ? Im confused .
