MATLAB is like a library/software to make mathematical simulations with the aid of a programming language, in this case C++. 

I recommend you to look in a search engine (Google, Yahoo, Bing) for MATLAB and read what is it, and how you can get involved with this nice tool. From the official page they have from MATLAB.

its a language,can be used for different purposes.it has hell lot of various functions.like,most of the matrix operations can be done easily,or if you want to work in data mining and neural networks,there is a nntoolbox.theres pretty much everything thats supported by matlab.and,the matlab tutorials,that come along with language are good.go through them.its a lang with various applications.learn the stuff thats related to what you want to do with the same.

Matlab costs to purchase, but your school may provide it.  If you are just wanting free software to do Matlab-like work, look into GNU Octave.  It is free, and in some ways is easier to use than Matlab.  Good luck!
