Evaluate. -|-83| I am thinking it is |83|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is -83

OpenStudy (theman):

Take out the absolute value sing first, you get -(83). Negative times positive equals negative so the answer is -83

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, you have the absolute value of -83, solve that first.. +,-83 but then you also have a - symbol outside the absolute value of -83 so it can't be +83, it must be -83.. if that makes sense to ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

don't we have to put in the brackets?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, the brackets just state that everything inside of it will be an absolute value, since there is a negative sign outside of the brackets, that means you would apply the sign outside the brackets to your answer inside the brackets because those brackets will go away once you solve what's inside of them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so I really don't have to put them in my final answer right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of it like this.. -1 * |-83| you would break that down into -1*83 = -83

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The brackets will not be in your final answer, no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're quite welcome
