Hubble was able to show that there is a linear relationship between the distance to a remote galaxy and the redshift of its spectral lines (the relationship is called Hubble's Law). Redshift is a direct measure of the velocity of the galaxy away from us...
That is experimental evidence, still doesn't explain why, though...
why - as in why this and not that - is not the realm of physics. Physics - and all sciences - says what is.
