Can someone please tell me what the Pythagorean theorem is and how is it used? I'm confused

the pythagorean theorem is the relationship between the sides of a right triangle and hypotenuse.\[a^2+b^2=c^2\] a and b are the legs and c is the hypotenuse. it just says that if u take the length of each of the leg and square them, then add them together that will equal the length of the hypotenuse squared
