Which statement is equivalent to |4x – 8| > 10? 4x – 8 > 10 4x – 8 < -10 -10 < 4x – 8 < 10 4x – 8 > 10 or 4x – 8 < -10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|A| > 10 means either A > 10 (in case A is positive) or A < -10 (in case A is negative). Does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um....do u k the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. Do you? You can figure it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. im mentally challenged in the math department....so yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i was joking.....im just not good @ math

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's ok! So, do you know what the word "equivalent" means, in the problem? That is, what is the book trying to ask about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. its not a book. its an online class

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, I'm showing my age! Ok. Are you ok with the word "equivalent"? Or is is part of what is hard to understand about the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i am. i bet ur not that old

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, suppose A is 4x-8 in this situation. 4x-8 is just a symbol, for the present. Writing |A| > 10 means writing |4x-8| > 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! thanks!!!!

Great! Glad to help. Best wishes.
