amistre64 how do u get this in simplified form y2-y-12/y2-9......explanation would be great in a way i can understand
is it y² - y - 12 divided by y² - 9 ?????
yes it is
well, we need to factor the top and bottom to see what cancels out as like terms ...
just consider these things as glorified fractions ..
what would: y^2 -y -12 ; factor as?
ok...... y² - y - 12 y² - 4y + 3y - 12 y(y - 4) +3(y - 4) (y + 3)(y - 4) y - 4 --------- = ---------------- = ---------------- = ------------ = ----- y² - 9 (y)² - (3)² (y - 3)(y + 3) (y + 3)(y - 3) y - 3
Y+4/Y+3, with the restriction y ≠ –3
?
lets see... y^2 -y -12 ; factors to (y-4)(y+3) ; so im thinking your (y+4) is either a typo or ....
ohh it was!
oh wait no it wasnt a typo
:( fml
y^2 - 9 is called a difference of squres, and you just gotta memorize how to do those :) (y-3)(y+3) ; to give us (y-4)(y+3) --------- ; cancels like terms to get (y-3)(y+3) (y-4) ---- ; x not= 3 is what i see it as (y-3)
does that make sense for you?
yes i see now :)
good :)
thnks:)
