Factor out the GCF. 21x^3y^2 - 7x^2y + 42xy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and show how to do this step by step if you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that i can understand it more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, look at the problem, and notice that the coefficents are all multiples of 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yes i c that cuz 21/7=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

42/7=6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now, do you notice that the highest degree that we can possible factor out is x^1 and y^1, why? b/c thats the lowest power or degree. We cant factor out an x^3 from 42xy right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes we cant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, basically the lowest common terms we can factor out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7 is the lowest coefficient and xy^1 is the lowest degree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the GCF is 7xy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7xy is the GCF becuase it is common to all three terms
