What is the difference between about and on?

OpenStudy (a_clan):

'on' is used when we have to be very precise about something. eg. my thesis is on the subject 'organic RFID'. 'about' is used when we do not want to be precise. eg. my thesis is something about 'organic RFID'. It is important to note here that 'about' cannot be used in official or a more technical context. In a technical writing, we have to use the first example while the second example can be used when we are deliberating on our thesis to somebody.
