the -4 is a power

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you raise a product to a power, you multiply the exponents: \[2 = 2^1\] \[c = c^1\] \[(2c)^{-4} = (2^1c^1)^{-4} = 2^{1\cdot -4}c^{1\cdot -4} = 2^{-4}c^{-4}\] And when you have negative exponents it's good to move them to the other side of the fraction bar and change the sign of the exponent. \[2^{-4}c^{-4} = \frac{1}{2^4c^4} = \frac{1}{16c^4}\]
