A main sequence star is one that has started burning hydrogen (Hydrogen fusion) turning it into Helium. A star stays on main sequence until has created enough Helium that hydrogen only burns in a shell around the sphere of Helium it has created at its center (shell burning) at which point it begins to heat up and expand to become a red giant. When that happens it is said to be leaving main sequence
