first, you classify whether it is mild or severe disease. if it is mild disease, you can treat a patient with oral drugs. if not, then you will need hospitalization and intravenous drugs.

if you do oral therapy, you then determine whether you may be dealing with malaria that is resistant or non-resistant to the drug chloroquine. if you are dealing with a resistant strain, you treat with an alternative first line drug such as malarone, or laram with doxycycline.

if you do intravenous therapy, there are two kinds of drugs. quinine derivatives and artemisinin derivatives.
