OpenStudy (karatechopper):

explain slope intercept form and show me how to solve or give the coordinates or this equation: y=3x+4, i got (0,4) but then what do i do to get more coordinates?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Slope intercept form is an equation written in the form y = m*x + b, where y and x are variables and m and b are constants. The name slope intercept form refers to the easy of identifying a line's slope and y-intercept once the equation is written in that form. m, the cooefficient of x, is the slope of the line. b, the constant term of the function, is the y intercept.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So yes, (0,4) is a coordinate of the equation. It is the y intercept, which just means the point that the line crosses the y axis, which is the same as the point on the line that has 0 as its x. There are a couple of easy ways to find more points. One way is to pick an x and solve for the corresponding y. The other way is to recognize what the slope is from the equation and then also what slope means. Slope means that as you add 1 to the x variable you add that number to the y variable. So for example, the equation y = 2x. The slope is 2, because that's the coefficient of x. (0,0) is the y intercept. I can add 1 to the x and 2 to the y to get a second point (1,2)

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

do we always add 1 to x and 2 to y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. And if you add some number k to x, assuming m is the slope, you add k*m to y.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

ok...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if my slope is 7, and I add 13 to x, I multiply 13*7 and I add that to y. And that is my x and y. That gives you a second point on the line.
