what is the difference between smooth and rough ER?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the basic difference is smooth er does not contain ribosomes and are concerned with lipid metabolism whereas rough er contain ribosomes on their surface and actively engaged in protein synthesis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Rough ER- is termed rough because it is studded with ribosomes (the molecules where proteins are made). Smooth ER- termed smooth because it does not have any ribosomes and so it appears smooth under a microscope. The Rough ER serves the function of holding onto ribosomes that are producing proteins which will be "packaged" by the cell and "trucked" elsewhere. Proteins from the rough ER are typically modified (tagged so that the cells knows where to transport them to) and sometimes these proteins can be "trucked" out of the cell. The smooth ER serves several functions but the primary ones are detoxification (works like your liver), metabolism of certain compounds and synthesis of lipids.
