a curve is traced by a point P(x,y) which moves such hat its distance from the point A(-1,1) is three times its distance from the point B(2,-1). Determine the equation of the curve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe the set of points that satisfy that ratio (1:3) is called an Apollonian Circle, but for the life of me i cant recall how to create them =/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can't we just use the distance formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You probably can. I just recall an obscure fact from a Geometry class i took a semester or two ago about find the set of all points that are a give ratio away from the 2 points.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its gonna make a circle for sure, i can remember that much lolol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess 3(sqrt((x+1)^2 +(y-1)^2) = sqrt((x-3)^2 + (y+1)^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yehh estudier is on the right track then just put it into a form that looks better i.e a cirlce

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yukky computations, might have been better off translating the thing to (0,0) first...
