Evan is painting a stool that has a cylindrical seat and four rectangular prism legs. The seat has a diameter of 8 inches and a height of 2 inches. Each leg is 2 inches by 2 inches by 10 inches. How much area will Evan have to paint? Use 3.14 for (pie). Show your work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The surface area of the cylinder is given by: \[2 \pi r^2+2 \pi r h\] and the surface area of each of the chair legs are given by: \[2l*w +2l*h + 2h*w\] the complete surface area of the stool is therefore 502.72 square inches. Now If Evan thinks this through completely, he doesn't have to paint the feet of the stool legs, or where they connect to the seat, so you can remove \[12*h*w\] from the area he has to paint. which leaves you with a grand total of 454.72 square inches
