A slightly crazy suggestion.
I was thinking that it would be great if the user could somehow prioritise which posts they would like to see (maybe a mix of how recent, whether they had answered, how many people had looked at that post/popularity etc.). This way you are not forced to necessarily view the newest post while the most relevant to you is buried under many other posts.

Then I had a better idea (hold your breath, this is the crazy part). It is to simply have no categories but the user can filter what they want to see. This would mean that one could view more than one topic at once..

...hopefully meaning that mathematics would not be the only subject getting activity. Perhaps a leveling system would be included, so you could filter to maybe year level or difficulty. 

Basically I was thinking about how much more activity maths gets and how that could somehow be spread into the other subjects.

Perhaps the user could decide which 'mode' they could view the forums in..

Anyway, back to what I was supposed to be studying...
