Usually when we write, we use many words that we don't need. Use contractions, avoid multiple adjectives (one or even none is usually fine), avoid redundancies, reduce long clauses and phrases, and overall just get to the point. Read through your essay and you'll likely find a lot of fluff you can throw out.
