For questions, 14 and 15, simplify the rational expressions. -x^2+10x-21 ------------ -3x^2+23x-14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first factor both top and bottom, did you try that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have no idea what to do...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm not too understanding about factoring

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, you should start studying that, because these kind of problems need to be factored first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that way we can see if terms divide out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[-x^2+10x-21=-(x^2-10x+21)\] \[-(x-7)(x-3)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-(x-7)(3x-2) for denominator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now can you see what terms would divide out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the top part and the bottom part looks like this \[-3x^2+23x-14=-(3x^2-23x+14)\] \[-(3x-2)(x-7)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, my computer is going slow...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks lagrangeson, now monika the "-" signs cancel and now all you have to do is find the same thing on the top and bottom and cross them out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.. so i have -(x-7)(x-3) ---------- -(3x-2)(x-7)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the x-7 cancels out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the x-7 cancel and your left with (x-3)/(3x-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, ok.. i think i get it... i have another one if u can help me out with...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

surf

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

28x^2-29x+6 ------------- -28x^2+50x-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, if i understand this correctly, the 28x^2 cancels out, right....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NOOOOO you need to get multiplication for it to cancel not addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so i multiply the 28^2, right and the bottom part too...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok you need to factor it like(ax-b)(dx-f)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u just lost me..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so to factor 28x^2-29x+6 (7x-2)(4x-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nd for the bottom you need to factor it again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, the bottom part is (-7x-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no the top ppart is that and the bottom part looks like this -28x^2+50x-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i have to find 2 #'s that multiply by 50 right...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-28x^2+50x-12=-(28x^2-50x+12) -(4x - 6 )(7x - 2 )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, i think i get it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the 7x-2 cancels and thats your answer ;::))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the factoring part is like a puzzle it doesnt come easy to many

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was trying to understand how you got those numbers... i know the 7x-2 were going to be the same answer but the bottom part was going to be a negative.. but i just didn't understand how to get the rest..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like x^2+2x+1 is factorable (x+1)(x+1) because i look at the first part and the last and make those numbers work that are in the middle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, ok.. when i see a fraction with some many numbers, I just get so confused...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really appreciate that you were helping me, with this... thank you so much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

medal? anytime just post ill get to itup a question on here attn bnut
