This shouldnt be too hard for some of ye,,it is for me though, A farmer has 100 metres of fence to build three sides of a rectangular sheep pen; he will use the straight wall of the field for the fourth side. What is the largest possible area of his sheep pen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the area has largest area when it is a square . so the largest area is (100/3)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a square is always the largest area for a perimeter, so divide 100 by 3 to get 33.333...,thus 33.33^2= 1111 m^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know the area is largest when its a square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

squares always have the largest area of a quadrilateral

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hes building a rectangular sheep pen though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

squares are by definition rectangles, which, along with several other shapes make up the group called "quadrilaterals" which is defined as closed shapes having exactly 4 sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in this case "rectangular" just tells us that the shape will have 4 sides and contain all right angles
