can someone help me evaluate -5|k+1| for k=-11 the "|...|" signs confuse me.

AL the absolute value sign does it find the "absolute value". So |5|=5 |-5|=5 as well.

An expression enclosed in |'s means the "absolute value". |-3| = 3. Basically, whatever is in there is always positive. \[-5|k+1|, k = -11 <=> -5 * 10 = -50\]
