There are several types of boundaries. First there are divergent plate boundaries, where the two plates are moving apart and molten mantel material is coming up from beneath the plates and creating new land.

There are transform boundaries where two plates slide past one another like the San Andreas fault in California.

Also, there are convergent boundaries where two plates come together and one is forced up over the other, in what is known as a subduction zone, or both plates can collide and be forced upward.
