−4[3x − (x + 2)]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you want me to explain it, or just lay the numbers out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

both please

Our goal here is to to simplify this. According to PEMDAS, we should start with wehat's in the parentheses. But because x +2 cannot be simplified, then we can move on to what's outside the parentheses. And that's the subtraction sign. We distribute the negative sign, so it becomes −4[3x −x - 2)]

Now we can combine the like terms −4[2x - 2] We can't simplify what's inside the brackets anymore, so now we can just distribute the -4 -8x + 8 And that's your answer!

You can check your answer too by substituting x with a random number like 0 or 1. −4[3x − (x + 2)] −4[3*(0) − ((0) + 2)] −4[3*0 − (2)] −4[0 − 2] −4[− 2] 8 -8x + 8 -8(0) + 8 0 + 8 8

Woops actually -8(x-1) is the last step to simplify it. What we did was factor -8 from -8x + 8.
