Find the critical number of y = x^2 + 2/x and find the points of extrema.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

The critical points are when the derivative equals zero.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

\[dy/dx = 2x - \frac{2}{x^{2}} = 0\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the complete solution?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

what do you mean? the solution will list the critical points (x-values) and whether they are local minimums or maximums (y-values)

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

i set up the derivative for you..you have to solve for x, which will represent the point where the slope is zero and you have a local min or max depending on the concavity
