How do you rewrite this equation without the absolute bars ? ||-7|-|-9||

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|-x| = x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

| 7 - 9| I have simplified one for you ...other is your one to do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would it be 7+9?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, Just do Normal subtraction inside mod | 7 - 9|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so |-2| which makes it 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah Correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You did the Problem ..Thank You

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if its positive inside the bars does that make it negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|a| = a if a >=0 |a| = -a if a < 0 |-7| therefore equals 7 |-9| therefore equals 9 Therefore | |-7| - |-9| | = | 7-9 | = |-2| Since -2 is less than 0 the |-2| equals 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it's positive it stays positive. If it is negative it changes sign.
