What is the purpose of Mitosis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's the first step in cell-division where the cell's chromosomes split into two.

Organisms need to make cells for growth and repair/replacement of the cells dying in the body. The new cells have to be identical to the older cells to fit into that type of tissue. Through Mitosis, the body produces identical cells with a complete set of DNA. They are exactly like their parents. It only has one division and that leads to two cells.
