Is solving a literal equation similar to or different from simplifying an expression such as 6-2(5^2 +7)/4?

No. Simplifying an expression involves using Order of Operations, or PEMDAS. Solving a literal equation involves isolating a variable. The process for simplifying equations should not be confused with solving an equation.
